Pro Assisted Suicide Measure Rejected by Maine Voters

In November 1998, Michigan voters dealt a crushing blow to assisted suicide proponents, defeating an initiative that would have legalized assisted suicide by a vote of 71-29 percent.

In January 2000, an attempt to legalize assisted suicide in the California Assembly (AB 1592) also failed.

On November 7, 2000, voters in Maine rejected a similar measure.

The proposed law, called the "Maine Death with Dignity Act," was virtually identical to the assisted suicide law which passed in Oregon in 1994, making Oregon the only place in the world where there is a law specifically permitting assisted suicide.
